At the Herne Hill Harriers open meeting on Saturday, there were strong performances by four of the club’s athletes resulting in national rankings in their respective age group.

In the youngest category, U13 girl Monae Winston ran 200m in 26.7secs, putting her fifth in the country and while Gary Ironmonger’s 400m time of 58.05secs edged him into the top 10 for the M50.

In the 10,000m, incorporating the club’s and Surrey County Championships, the times of M50 runner Dave Taylor (33 minutes 54.37secs) and M40 athlete Simon Coombes (33:14.06), saw them progressing to second and seventh in the UK in their respective age groups.

Coombes, who does not qualify for the Surreys, placed third overall in the open race and won the club title, while Taylor in fifth overall claimed silver medals in both championships.

In the same race, Sara Roberts (42:24.63) was named as club champion and third Surrey finisher.

Elsewhere, a duo of Harriers youths took home bronze medals from the England Athletics Age Group Championship at Bedford at the weekend.

Alfred Mawdsley, throwing 45.68m in the U15 boys’ discus, and Feysel Nadew, clocking a personal best 1:53.94 in the U17 men’s 800m, were waving the Harriers’ flag.
