Commuters heading through Raynes Park from Epsom this morning found themselves left on a platform after the train they were travelling on was cancelled to “ease congestion”.

Travellers on the 7.52am service from Epsom to London Waterloo were informed shortly before the train reached Motspur Park that their journey would be terminated at Raynes Park, following a points failure outside Waterloo.

Fiona Scarlett, 43, who was travelling from Epsom, said she was unable to get on the next two trains that passed through the station because of the volume of people trying to continue their journey, and ended up late for work.

Ms Scarlett said: “It caused chaos as our train was packed, and as you can see the platform was jammed. Raynes Park platforms aren’t the widest.

“I assume it was relating to the signalling problems at Waterloo, but it’s madness to dump a whole train of people like that.

“I couldn’t get on the next train as it was already pretty full when it arrived and could only take a few. I managed to get on the third train that came through, and that one took the last people from my train.

“That train was pretty packed, but at least everyone got on it. I was about 15 minutes late for work, which isn’t massive, but on a Monday morning is far from ideal.”

A spokesman for South West trains confirmed the train was terminated to reduce congestion caused by a points failure outside Waterloo.

All lines at Waterloo were reopened shortly after 10am.
