Eleven former England stars claimed a narrow victory when they lined up against Banstead Cricket Club for a special fundraising Twenty20 match on Friday evening.

The England Masters - featuring Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe and Ashes winner Simon Jones - were ‘pushed all the way’ by Banstead CC, winning by only 20 runs.

The club raised £15,000 from the day, some of which will go towards building a new pavilion, with the remaining amount to be donated to the Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.

Banstead’s head of cricket, Tom Lancefield, said: "Playing against 11 ex-England cricketers at Banstead was a truly memorable sight and a bit surreal.

Mr Lancefield, 24, said: "It was a great opportunity to showcase Banstead CC to the local community and inspire some of our younger players.

"Everyone who came on the day was treated to a great spectacle and all in all the day was a huge success."

While the Masters had 271 combined England test caps between them, it was Banstead’s David Hurst who caught the eye, making an outstanding half-century.

It wasn’t just about raising money though; club chairman Ashley Head said they hosted the ‘truly memorable day’ to also promote cricket in the community.

Mr Head, 64, said: "Cricket used to be the summer sport for boys in all schools. Today cricket is played in very few state schools so it’s left to cricket clubs like ours to support our national sport.

"This match against the Masters was to encourage young kids to enjoy cricket and to show them how we arrange coaching and matchplay for children between seven and 18."
